Harry Wilson was the obvious January fix that Tottenham ignored – This is why

Fulham’s Harry Wilson is in talks with Aston Villa ahead of the expiration of his current deal this summer.

The versatile attacker has taken on a talismanic role at Craven Cottage this season, scoring nine Premier League goals and laying on six assists.

The Welshman joined the Cottagers in 2021 and has continued to shift through the gears during Fulham’s time in the top-flight, and is now a more than reliable winger in the prime of his career.

With injuries being a constant theme at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium for the best part of eighteen months now, securing a deal to sign Wilson in January would have been an absolute no-brainer for Tottenham.

Instead, he is now a major target for multiple clubs heading into the summer.

Harry Wilson would have been a perfect signing for depleted Tottenham

With both Mohammed Kudus and Dejan Kulusevski sidelined, Tottenham’s options out on the right-hand side are thin, while Wilson Odobert is also now set to be a long-term absentee on the other side.

Wilson is someone who now carries fantastic experience in the Premier League, having made a real name for himself at Fulham after a previous spell in the top flight with Bournemouth.

With a wand of a left foot, the 28-year-old has been known for his set-piece ability throughout his career, while his abilities on the ball have only continued to improve throughout his career.

Now a crucial creative cog for both Fulham and Wales, Wilson’s game has evolved to become much more than just his ball striking.

For a Tottenham side severely lacking numbers, they would have been bringing in a player with supreme technical qualities, alongside fantastic ability in tight spaces developed throughout his time in the Premier League.

And with just six months left on his deal at the time, the Wales international’s signature would have came a relatively low price.

Missing out on Wilson highlights Tottenham’s recruitment problem

For multiple years, there has been no real direction when it comes to Tottenham’s recruitment.

At times, it is hard to argue with anything other than their spending being haphazard.

On too many occasions, Spurs are left to miss out on key targets who would guarantee an improvement to the side, instead having to bring in unproven or misused talent due to their wage structure when compared to fellow top sides.

All of this has resulted in Tottenham’s current predicament at the bottom end of the Premier League.

Wilson would not have been the flashiest signing in the Premier League, but as far as January moves go, he would have been as reliable as they come.

At 28, he has years left on the clock, while his experience would have added something to a depleted Tottenham group – one that is also severely out of form.

However, once again, one of Spurs’ rivals are set to snatch someone, creating another question of ‘why not Tottenham?’ twelve months down the line.
