Michael Carrick may have cost Man United thousands as Kobbie Mainoo contract talks stall
Michael Carrick’s success could come at a cost to Manchester United‘s finances as Kobbie Mainoo continues to play a key role.
The 20-year-old had been but a shadow during Ruben Amorim’s reign at Old Trafford, being given just a handful of minutes across all competitions and leaving supporters baffled.
Mainoo is one of the club’s most talented and promising academy products, but as the saga with Amorim continued, it seemed more and more likely that he would leave during the winter transfer window.
Of course, none of the loyal supporters at Old Trafford wanted to see the midfielder depart, either on loan or permanently, and Mick Brown told Football Insider that Mainoo could still leave Man United.

Michael Carrick has changed Kobbie Mainoo’s future at Old Trafford
Since Carrick’s arrival, Mainoo has played every single minute, normally being partnered with Casemiro, a far cry from his experience under the last manager.
Despite this, there is still no movement on the 20-year-old’s contract situation, with his current deal set to expire in the summer of 2027 and plenty of suitors keeping close tabs on him.
There was a hope that Amorim’s sacking would spark a breakthrough in contract talks, but according to the Daily Mail (3 March), lingering issues between his representatives and the hierarchy remain.
Mainoo had agreed to compromise on his terms before not hearing back from the hierarchy, and it is unclear if those terms would be accepted now, given his importance under Carrick.
Man United hierarchy have been backed into a corner by talented gem
United may have no choice but to offer some serious money to the academy product, who has now become one of the first names on the teamsheet, especially if Carrick keeps his job at Old Trafford.
Football Insider understands that Carrick is in a strong position to remain Man United boss, and there is no doubt that the 44-year-old would be pushing for the talented midfielder to stay as well.
Should the club fail to reach an agreement with Mainoo, it is only a matter of time before another club come along to steal his signature, especially if the player is not happy with the situation either.
While Carrick has made an unbelievable difference since becoming the interim manager, he has inadvertantly given one of his players leverage when it comes to getting a new deal.
