PL make announcement on West Ham vs Everton incident that left Moyes 'amazed'

Premier League officials have deemed that Everton shouldn’t have been given a penalty for an incident involving Thierno Barry in their 2-1 loss at West Ham.

After suffering a stoppage-time defeat to bitter rivals Liverpool last time out, Everton endured more late heartbreak on Saturday, this time at West Ham.

Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall cancelled out Tomas Soucek’s opener at London Stadium, only for substitute Callum Wilson to grab a 92nd-minute winner.

The result saw Everton drop to 11th in the Premier League with four matches remaining, as their hopes of securing European football next season were dealt a hammer blow.

However, David Moyes felt Everton should have had a penalty late on against West Ham but the officials thought otherwise.

David Moyes in disbelief over West Ham call

While Everton had more possession, shots on goal and a higher Expected Goals tally, they left their push far too late.

If they had played as they did for the final half hour for the majority of the contest, Everton could have claimed all three points in the capital. Instead, they got nothing.

Before Dewsbury-Hall’s equaliser, Everton appealed for a penalty after the ball appeared to hit the hand of West Ham’s Mateus Fernandes as he tussled with Barry.

The Toffees players, fans, and Moyes all cried for a spot-kick but after a VAR review, they were left sorely disappointed.

According to the Premier League Match Centre, the handball by the West Ham midfielder was deemed as accidental.

“The referee’s call of no penalty was checked and confirmed by VAR – with it deemed that Fernandes accidentally handled the ball while grappling with an opponent,” the tweet read.

Everton scored soon after through Dewsbury-Hall, but instead of kicking on for a winner, 17th-placed West Ham regrouped and claimed a vital three points.

What did David Moyes make of penalty call?

After the match, Moyes said Everton didn’t deserve to lose the game, just as was the case against Liverpool last Sunday.

The Scot added that he was a bit taken aback that Everton weren’t awarded a penalty for the Fernandes incident.

He told BBC Sport: “I’m a bit surprised. I’ve been to see them [the officials] and VAR are saying it was grappling – well, the boy marking him was grappling.

“He punched the ball. It would have been harsh, but I’m amazed they haven’t given it. If any team was going to go and win it, it was probably us. We just didn’t do well enough at the end.”
