Brennan Johnson: Tottenham may now wish they hadn’t signed off on £35m Crystal Palace transfer

Brennan Johnson joined Crystal Palace for £35million in the winter window, and Tottenham Hotspur probably wish they had a player like him in the team now.

Having joined Tottenham back in the summer of 2023 from Nottingham Forest, Johnson enjoyed two-and-a-half years of good football in N17.

The Wales international never really evolved into superstardom at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, but he was a consistent and reliable performer that always gave everything in a Lilywhite shirt.

After Spurs’ 3-0 loss to Nottingham Forest on Sunday, Igor Tudor’s team appears to be in dire lack of those kind of players at the moment.

So, if Tottenham could rewind the clock to the January transfer window, Johnson probably would’ve never left knowing what they know now about the trajectory of their season.

Brennan Johnson is exactly the type of player Tottenham need

Many Tottenham fans were against Johnson’s sale in the winter transfer window, as the forward was Spurs’ top goalscorer last season.

The 24-year-old scored 11 Premier League goals last term, whilst also adding a further seven across cup competitions, taking his total tally to 18 in 51 games in 2024-25.

So, when his £35m move to Crystal Palace was completed on 1 January this year, Tottenham were sitting 12th in the Premier League.

The prospect of relegation to the Championship hadn’t even crossed anyone’s minds in N17 at that stage with 26 points to their name, but since then, they’ve won only four more points in the league.

His sale to Palace also wasn’t reinvested back into the forward line either, with the money going towards deals for Conor Gallagher and Souza respectively.

As such, it’s hard not to feel a sense of naivety from Tottenham looking at where they’ve ended up since he left, with the grass certainly not being greener for them since his exit.

At the very least, Johnson always gave 110 per cent for Spurs, and even if he wasn’t on the scoresheet, whoever was in the Tottenham dugout always knew that they’d get a performance out of that shirt if he was on the pitch.

How has Johnson started with Crystal Palace?

So, whilst the grass hasn’t been greener for Tottenham without Johnson in the team, it’s not yet proved greener for him with Crystal Palace either.

As we enter the international break, Johnson has yet to open his goalscoring account for the Eagles, with zero goals in 16 total appearances across all competitions.

He’s not yet been able to cement a place in Oliver Glasner’s starting XI either, and only came off the bench for a 23-minute cameo against Tottenham in their 3-1 win on 5 March.

Overall then, there’s probably a tinge of regret from both camps over this transfer at the moment, as Tottenham would surely love a player like him in their team right now, whilst Johnson is perhaps wondering whether Selhurst Park was his best destination.
