Jean-Philippe Mateta may never play for Crystal Palace again after deadline day embarrassment
Jean-Philippe Mateta may already have pulled on a Crystal Palace kit for the final time despite his deadline day move to AC Milan falling through.
Mateta was widely expected to leave Selhurst Park on transfer deadline day after making clear his desire to leave the club in search of a new challenge.
The France international was left out as Oliver Glasner’s side drew 1-1 with Nottingham Forest, with the boss explaining his head wasn’t in the right place to play.
Milan moved ahead of the likes of Nottingham Forest, Tottenham and Juventus for his signature, but the deal eventually fell through after a late twist.
He will now be forced to return to South London with his tail between his legs – but may not return to the first-team setup for a while after a new development.

Jean-Philippe Mateta must undergo knee surgery
It has since come to light that Mateta may have to undergo surgery on a knee injury which he has been carrying and playing through since November.
He went through rigorous medical checks ahead of the proposed move to Milan after concerns emerged, with conflicting reports about the true reason they pulled out.
Some suggested his agent and entourage had placed new hurdles with their demands, but the most likely explanation is the ongoing injury concern.
After returning to Palace, who moved quickly to replace him with the addition of Jorgen Strand Larsen, he should now be allowed to finally undergo surgery.

Reports claim Mateta could be ruled out for three or four months should he have the procedure, and he could therefore miss the remainder of the season.
Given the level of interest in him during the mid-season window, clubs will be expected to return in the summer, when Palace will again be open to offers.
Crystal Palace fans have turned on Mateta
Mateta was a fan-favourite and somewhat of a legend at Palace, with his iconic celebration, “boom”, and Vengaboys-inspired chant built around him.
The supporters at Selhurst Park have typically been accommodating to players with lofty ambitions, as the likes of Marc Guehi and Eberechi Eze remain revered.
However, the way Mateta has gone about the entire transfer saga, including rejecting a contract offer of around £100,000 per week and demanding a higher sum, has left a sour taste.
Glasner has pleaded with the crowd not to turn on the striker despite his recent antics, insisting he has always given 100 per cent to the club and the badge.
While his role in last season’s FA Cup success has immortalised him in the history of the club and the memories of the fans, he has a long way to go until all is forgiven.
